Carrot Juice and Keffir Spicy Shake

Photo credit: f10n4Try this smoothie to soothe the stomach and digestive tract.

For one serving you will need:

  • 2-3 large carrots
  • Small knob of fresh ginger
  • 3 tablespoons Keffir (or natural yogurt)
  • 1/2 banana
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon of PURE maple syrup (Do NOT use maple syrup substitutes.)
  • Pinch of cinnamon
  • Pinch of nutmeg

Method:

Juice fresh carrots and ginger.  Blend with other ingredients and drink immediately.

WHY THESE INGREDIENTS WORK:

  • CARROTS contain nearly 500 health-boosting phytochemicals.  The juice has been used as far back as ancient Greece for all kinds of stomach disorders and is still recommended for conditions including peptic ulcers, gastritis and Crohn’s disease.
  • KEFFIR is a naturally fermented dairy product which provides beneficial gut flora.  If you avoid dairy products, almond milk is a good alternative.  Or substitute your favourite whey protein with the addition of a probiotic supplement.
  • GINGER is widely known to benefit conditions of the digestive system including colic, nausea, morning sickness and motion sickness.  It is an excellent natural anti-inflammatory.
  • BANANA are easily disgested  and contain prebiotics (fructooligosaccharides) which feed friendly bacteria in the gut.  Prebiotics in banana enhance the benefit of probiotics in the kefir.
  • NUTMEG is widely used for digestive conditions including nausea, flatulence and dyspepsia.
  • CINNAMON is used medically for weak digestion. It can be helpful for dyspepsia, nausea and excess gas. It helps stabilize blood sugar.
